Meet Dr. Moe Hakim

Dr. Moe Hakim is a Harvard trained, internationally recognized and Board Certified Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon with deep expertise in TMJ and Jaw Surgery.  In addition to training residents at Harvard and both residents and fellows at The University of Michigan, he routinely lectures nationally and internationally, and has taught didactic and cadaveric courses to practicing surgeons from all over the world including The United States, Canada, Germany, England, Scotland, Italy, Australia, New Zealand, Mexico, Brazil, Taiwan and India.  It is not uncommon for surgeons to fly from Asia, Europe or different parts of North America to watch him operate.

After graduating from the top 5% in his class at NYU College of Dentistry, he completed his residency training in the Nation’s Capital at MedStar Washington Hospital, where his training had heavy focus on orthognathic (corrective jaw) surgery and dental implants.  He then spent two years at Harvard, where he completed the only fellowship program in North America (at the time) for minimally invasive TMJ surgery with Dr. Joseph McCain, the pioneer of advanced TMJ Arthroscopy.  During his fellowship, he developed expertise in minimally invasive TMJ surgery as well as TMJ replacement, and refined his expertise in jaw surgery.

After completing his fellowship at Harvard, he became a full-time surgeon at the University of Michigan, where he introduced advanced TMJ arthroscopy, co-founded the 2nd of its kind TMJ surgery fellowship in North America and used his expertise to create a dental implant service for the residency program to further enrich residents’ education.  Patients traveled from the Midwest, East Coast and West Coast to see him for consultations, 2nd opinions and surgeries.  All while obtaining his MBA from The Michigan Ross School of Business.

When it comes to research, Dr. Hakim prefers impact over quantity.  He only publishes articles that can open doors for innovation, challenge conventional wisdom or change the way people practice.

Dr. Hakim met his wife Heather while in dental school at NYU. She is the Board Certified Pediatric Dentist at her practice Mama’s Pediatric Dentistry located at their shared office. After having their third child they decided to move to the East Coast so the kids can grow up closer to family and friends.

In his free time, he likes to spend time with his family, play tennis, practice guitar solos, and sit down and do nothing.  Although he likes to travel with the family, after a roundtrip from Michigan to Hawaii with their 3 young children, they vowed not to fly anywhere for the next few years.

Dr. Hakim has published many peer reviewed publications, review articles and research abstracts that have helped advance the specialty of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. He dedicated six years primarily to TMJ surgery research because he believed it was the field that lacked the most understanding compared to other areas of the specialty.  He put his effort where the highest impact would be.  Click here to learn about Dr. Hakim’s scholarly activities and publications.
